Several East Texas communities are honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through celebrations on Monday, January 15.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist who fought for the rights of Black Americans during the civil rights movement.
MLK Day is not only a day to remember and celebrate Dr. King's life and achievements. It is also a day to reflect on ongoing struggles for civil rights, equality, and justice. This year's MLK Day is special because it lands on January 15, which is Dr. King's birthday.
CBS19 has compiled a list of MLK Day events across East Texas:
Carthage
- MLK Event: On January 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Downtown Carthage
Hawkins
- MLK Prayer Breakfast: On January 13 at 8:30 a.m. at Jarvis Christian University.
Longview
- Opening Reception and Jazz Concert: On January 12, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Longview Community Center with featured artist David Whiteman Band and opening artist Calvin Tatum and King States
- 6 p.m.: Reception
- 7 p.m.: Concert
- Parade on MLK Jr. Boulevard: On January 13, at 10 a.m.
- Parade Route will be along Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., starting at Pittman Street and ending at Foster Middle School.
- Community Festival: On January 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Broughton Recreation Center, 801 S. MLK Jr. Blvd.
- Humanitarian Award Celebration: January 13 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkview Baptist Church.
- MLK March and Interfaith Service: On January 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- 11:30 a.m.: March begins at Broughton Recreation Center, 801 S. MLK Jr. Blvd. and ends at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 306 S. MLK Jr. Blvd.
- 12 p.m.: Service at the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church-Longview with speaker Reverend J.T. Harris from the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church of Carthage.
Lufkin
- Martin Luther King March: On January 15 at 11:30 a.m. at the Homer Garrison Building (LISD)
Mount Vernon
- MLK March: On January 15 at 9:30 a.m. at starting at the Denton Baptist Church
Nacogdoches:
- SFA's MLK Day of Service: On January 15 on the second floor at the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.
- Check-in: 7:30 a.m.
- Volunteers at the service sites: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tyler
- 5th Annual MLK Spoken Word Competition: On January 12, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Foundry Coffee House featuring guests Devyn Hines and Marlondos Fields.
- Texas African American Museum 1st Martin Luther King Jr. Parade: On January 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The parade will begin on Glenwood Ave. to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., concluding with a program at the Texas African American Museum.
Winnsboro
