TRICK-OR-TREAT: Staying safe this Halloween

As neighborhoods start filling up with costumes and candy, it’s important to get the treat and not the trick.

TYLER, Texas — As neighborhoods start filling up with costumes and candy, it’s important to get the treat and not the trick this Halloween night!

Some Smith County neighborhoods are dealing with broken street lights or no street lights at all to illuminate the path for trick-or-treaters.

"I would suggest that parents have flashlights as you walk up to the residence. Everyone doesn't have great intentions. So let's just be safe and look out for the well-being of our children," said Smith County Constable Ralph Caraway Jr., Smith County Constable.

Nemanja Filipvoic, of Tyler, teamed up with his neighbors to add more lighting to help guide the little ghouls and goblins.

"During the night, they're all backlit and there's little lights that spotlight onto them," Filipvoic said. "I hope that it brings them closer to the house because I have a lot of candy I need to get rid of."

He’s even taken the time to make his own decorations and goody bags to hand out to the trick-or-treaters.

"Walk up to the door with the children just to make sure everything is safe," Caraway Jr. said. "Check the candy and make sure that the candy is properly sealed,"

Caraway Jr. also said drivers need to be extra careful tonight in populated areas.
