TYLER, Texas — The Caldwell Zoo is howling into spooky season with Boo at the Zoo.
This weekend, the zoo animals will indulge in fall's favorite feast: pumpkins. Primates, rodents and big cats alike will receive pumpkins to ring in the spooky holiday. The lions are often a crowd favorite.
"They're going to be batting it around, sniffing it, cracking them open, and getting their treat inside," said Michelle Shockley, supervisor of mammals. "They can also be like they are in the wild."
The pumpkins are a form of behavioral enrichment for the animals. The lions get a chance to flex their wild instincts and claw the pumpkin open, while the herbivores use it as a sweet treat.
In addition to seasonal treats for the animals, the zoo will host trick-or-treating booths and Halloween-themed foods at the café.
"We want to encourage people to dress up, it just makes for a really good time," said Shockley.
Boo at the Zoo runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend, October 26 and 27.
