EXPLORING THE CALDWELL ZOO: Giving with the enrichment tree

Donors chose an ornament from the tree and donate the requested item. Instead of toys and clothing, donors will see animal-related gifts.

TYLER, Texas — It's time for the Caldwell Zoo's more than 10-year-long holiday tradition: the enrichment tree.

The concept is similar to that of an angel tree. Donors chose an ornament from the tree and donate the requested item. Instead of toys and clothing, donors will see animal-related gifts like cat nip and other treats.

"We've got lots of items on the list that we put together for the animals," said Tori Scarber, curator of animal behavior and welfare. "It's going to be items that promote natural behaviors, forge feeders, mirrors."

Gift ideas range from less than $2 to almost $200, according to the zoo's Amazon Wishlist.  The list is put together by the zookeepers in accordance with each animal's needs. For example, the elephants love unique snacks like peanut butter while the lions are hoping for boomer balls.

"We actually are nonprofit," Scarber said. "This is a great time to not only give a gift, but give the community the ability to share in the joy with the animals."

Some lucky donors may be able to find a thank you video online and see clips of the animals using their gifts.
