EXPLORING THE CALDWELL ZOO: Elephant training for improved wellness

The old phrase says "a memory like an elephant." These giants of the Savanna certainly have some of the most nimble minds in the animal kingdom.

TYLER, Texas — The old phrase goes "a memory like an elephant." These giants of the Savanna certainly have some of the most nimble minds in the animal kingdom.

Meet the Tanya, one of the elephants at the Caldwell Zoo!

Tanya is a 46-year-old African Elephant with a sparkle in her eye and a sharp mind.

To keep up with her brain power, the Caldwell Zoo regularly conducts elephant training. Each behavior serves a purpose for the creature's health and wellness. Some behaviors include elephant yoga to maintain fitness and a foot raise for nail trimming.

During the training sessions, elephants are fed a variety of fresh produce including lettuce and sweet potatoes.  Additionally, each elephant receives about 100 pounds of hay per day.
