TYLER, Texas — It all began when the Tyler Glass Recreation and City of Tyler staff decided they wanted to improve the center's weight room.
"And we thought what a better way to do it than to get some beautiful art," Leanne Robinette, the City of Tyler Parks, Tourism and Beautification Manager explained.
Local artist Dace Lucia Kidd has previously been commissioned by the City of Tyler to create artistic pieces, including two already at the Glass Recreation Center.
"We love working with her, so we just reached out to her and we kind of threw an idea at her," Robinette said. "She jumped right on board and was able to come up with some really great ideas for us."
After brainstorming for two months and working for three days, Kidd unveiled a beautiful work of art.
"[The piece is] designed to inspire and transform the space so people that use the Glass Recreation Center would just feel better about their environment," Kidd said.
Kidd included specific sights from Tyler in the mural.
"It says inspire and in each letter it represents a different landmark," Robinette said. "So we have Emmett Scott, we have Rose Rudman Park, we have Fun Forest, we have several just different landmarks to represent the City of Tyler as a whole."
The Glass Recreation Center can be found inside the letter "E."
To celebrate the new addition to the center, the city held a surprise reveal celebration, which Kidd said she thought people enjoyed.
"I felt that they were very brightened up and uplift by the colors," Kidd said.
However, this isn't the only addition the Glass Recreation Center will be seeing from Kidd this year.
"The next piece will be actually above our door," Robinette explained. "She's actually going to paint the Glass Recreation Center in beautiful bright letters."
Kidd said she is looking forward to the next project which she will begin working on next weekend.
