An elderly Lufkin man who had been missing for several days was found dead Thursday night.

Algianon 'Moses' Jeffero, 85, was first reported missing Sunday evening by his wife.

According to Lufkin police, officers were called just before 8 p.m. to a creek along Ellen Park Drive. Police found Jeffero's body in the water.

“Please keep the Jeffero family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this tragic loss,” Lufkin Police Chief David Thomas said. “With his decades of service as a role model and mentor, Mr. Jeffero was an irreplaceable part of this community. He will truly be missed.”

For nearly a week, the Lufkin community united to try to find Jeffero.

He said that morning he wanted to go home," Jeffero's wife of 64 years Edrine said Thursday. "He said this is not his house, this is not where he stays."

Hours later, Moses hopped the fence and left the area.

"I heard the fence, keeping noise, and then I looked there and he was coming on the outside of the fence on this side over there," Edrine Jeffero said. "That's when I said Moses, you come on back I said don't go nowhere."

According to Edrine, hundreds of residents came out to support the family by looking for her missing husband.

In addition to the community, police searched for Jeffero using canine units, a helicopter and a drone.

The official cause of death has not been released.
