The future is here: Robots

UT Health Science Center Provost Jeffrey Levin talks about the future of the work industry with robots.

TYLER — Robots are becoming more and more common in the work industry.

Robots will displace 75 million jobs globally in 2022, but create 133 million new jobs according to Swiss Think Tank.

UT Health Science Center Provost Jeffrey Levin said that robots in the work industry is progress.

"So the concept of using robotics in manufacturing and in work processing certainly is not new it's just people are a little fearful again because of how they imagine robotics would actually be used," Levin said.

A robot is defined as a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer.

While Swiss Think Tank predicts robots taking jobs, robots are already working even in Tyler.

"The tire manufacturing facility here for years in Tyler and even years ago they have units that pretty independently build tires. There's just an operator there who's doing certain parts of the operation," Levin said.

There are also several hospitals in Tyler with robotic surgical arms, which Levin said is a good thing when performing surgeries.

"Those robotic devices that allow you to do surgical techniques with much greater precision," Levin said.

The Tyler Police Department even uses a robot to detect bombs.

While the future is unknown Levin said he doesn't think robots will be a replacement for humans.

"I think you'll see a lot of side by side activity."
