TYLER — Runway 4-22 at Tyler Pounds Regional Airport officially opened Friday.
At 8,330 feet, the new runway is the longest in the city.
Construction began four years ago to widen and lengthen the runway, as well as rehabilitate it. In all, a layer of concrete 14 inches thick was placed over a 12-inch thick base section.
Due to the reconstruction, the runway will no be able to handle heavier loads. The extra length and width will also allow for safer landings and takeoffs.
The cost of the project was budgeted at $48 million, with 90 percent of the money coming from FAA grants.
The airport is now hoping to secure FAA funs to rebuild the taxiway heading towards the runway.
The city will hold a ceremonial ribbon cutting Thursday, January 17.
