Man leads Lufkin police on vehicle pursuit, speeds exceed 100 mph

A Nacogdoches man led Lufkin police on a vehicle pursuit where speeds exceeded well over 100 miles per hour.

LUFKIN — A man is in jail after allegedly leading Lufkin police on a high-speed chase Friday evening.

According to Lufkin police, officer responded to Walmart for a theft in progress call.

Police say 47-year-old Leslie Jackson of Nacogdoches had taken a television out of its box and began walking toward the garden center.

An officer tried to stop Jackson, but he allegedly told the officer, "I already talked to them."

Police say he then took off in a Chevy Cruze with a female passenger inside at a high rate of speed. After escaping through the Sam's and Outback parking lots, Jackson eventually made his way onto South First Street during the chase.

According to police, Jackson exceeded 100 miles per hour during the chase.

He then got into a maroon Chevy Cruze, where a female passenger was waiting and took off out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed, ignoring the officer. Jackson drove through the Sam's parking lot around Outback Steakhouse and turned right on Daniel McCall. He then took a left on College and a right on South First Street. Jackson made a U-turn on South First Street and continued north, reaching speeds well in excess of 100 mph.

The pursuit continued northbound on U.S. 58 with speeds exceeding 130 miles per hour.

Deputies with the Nacogdoches Sheriff's Office attempted to spike Jackson's car, but he veered across the median to the south bound lanes of U.S. 59. He soon returned to the northbound lane and later turned onto CR 522.

Once on CR 522, police say he bailed and took off on foot. A Lufkin police officer caught up to Jackson and arrested him. He was taken to the Nacogdoches County Jail on a warrant for criminal nonsupport.

The female passenger did not attempt to run. Officers say she was visibly shaken. After talking to her, they believe she was not involved in the theft.
