The East Texas Communities Foundation is holding it's third annual East Texas Giving Day, an opportunity for people to donate online to their favorite nonprofit organizations.

During last year’s event, 177 area non-profits participated in East Texas Giving Day, combining for more than $498,000.

In 2016, $479,000 was raised for almost 200 area nonprofits agencies. The goal is to raise $1 million for the participating organizations.

East Texas Giving Day is designed to make the most of social media by getting donors to share the fact that they made a donation with their friends and followers on social media.

The hope is for those shares to inspire interest and potentially more donations.

Donors can use EastTexasGivingDay.org to search for nonprofits by name, city, or zip code, as well as category. Nonprofit categories include animals, arts and culture, education, environment, health and youth development.

ETCF does not make any money on East Texas Giving Day. According to the organization’s website, ETCF has invested significant staff time and resources into the creation and execution of East Texas Giving Day to provide area nonprofits a simplified platform to raise annual support and reach new donors. Other than nonprofit registration fees which are to be used to offset some of the Giving Day technology costs and promotion of the event, ETCF will not receive no compensation for hosting East Texas Giving Day.
