East Texas burn survivors host Christmas drive

Burn Survivors of East Texas host a Christmas Drive and Support Group

After a fiery car accident, Cindy Grimes says she was severely burned, taken to the hospital and later sent home with a pat on the back, thinking she was on her on.

"I thought I was the only person in East Texas that had gone through this." said Cindy.

That was in 1970. 40 years later, Cindy sees someones story on T.V that was similar to hers.

Cindy explained, "There had been a car accident with two people burned and they weren't giving any information and I remember thinking, Lord if they're not going to survive, don't make this be a long drawn out thing for their family. Please just take them now if they are not going to make it."

After a couple of years, Bella Palacios and Cindy happened to be in the same hospital.

Cindy said, "We all go to E.M.C. and she walked in with her children and I recognized the little boy and her husband."

"We walked in she's like "Oh Bella, I've been praying for you!" and I was like, "ok," I didn't even know who she was."

"I said ma'am you don't even know me, but I have prayed for you for a year, it's been two years now. She just looked at me and hugged me."

Their friendship opened the door for other survivors to know they are not alone.

"It's wonderful when you get support from people but it's a little more in-depth when you get it from a person that's been through something like this." said Bella.

For the first time in Tyler, the Burn Foundation support group is celebrating Christmas, Triumph and Community.

"There are others like you that are going through what you are going through." said Bella.
