Husband, wife escape house fire started by lightning strike, family dog perishes

Smith County, Troup, Chapel Hill and Whitehouse fire departments responded to the blaze.

TROUP, Texas — Fire crews from several Smith County departments responded to a house fire Tuesday afternoon in Troup.

The fire broke out around 2 p.m. on County Road 2142 after a residence was reportedly struck by lightning.

When officials arrived on scene, they said approximately 25 percent of the residence was on fire.

According to the Smith County Fire Marshal's Office, a married couple was inside the home when the lightning hit. The pair was able to escape unharmed. However, the couple's dog died in the fire. 

According to Smith County Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson, the house sustained fire, heavy smoke and heat damage. The house is insured and the Red Cross has reached out to the family to offer assistance.
