MARSHALL, Texas — Three people have been arrested for reckless driving Monday night in Marshall.

Around 7:45 p.m., officers with the Marshall Police Department and Marshall Independent School District Police Department responded to multiple reports of numerous vehicles driving recklessly in the Marshall Mall parking lot and surrounding areas.

When police arrived on scene, they saw several drivers doing “donuts” in the mall parking lot, passengers riding on top of vehicles and hanging out of vehicles, and other drivers speeding around with no obvious regard for pedestrians.

As a result, three people were arrested.

An investigation into various social media activity indicated this was a planned gathering among students and friends of the victims of a recent crash following the vigil held at the high school Monday evening, according to police.

Officials would like to remind the public that it is illegal and dangerous to drive recklessly.

"We understand our community is grieving the tragic loss of two high school students, but reckless driving will not be tolerated in our city," the MPD says. "We are urging parents to talk to their children about the dangers of negligent driving and the consequences."

The Marshall Police Department will have extra officers on patrol Saturday, January 19, during the funerals for the teens who were killed in a crash on Saturday, January 12.

Police say anyone caught trespassing, driving recklessly or otherwise in an unsafe manner, will be arrested and their vehicle impounded.

"Our community has suffered enough tragedy and we certainly don’t want anyone else getting hurt or killed, especially for something that can be prevented," says the MPD.
